Civitavecchia, Italy

Civitavecchia, Italy

In 2023 we visited Italy and loved it.  The art and history were amazing, as were the scenic beaches and towns.  The people were friendly and welcoming, and we found them to be either very superstitious, or perhaps, just very keen marketers.    When in Rome, we were told that if we threw a coin into the Trevi Fountain, it meant that we would someday return.  Then we went to Florence and were advised that if we stuck a hand inside the mouth of a stuffed boar we found in a market there, we would one day return.  As it turned out, we endured both the risk of a citation for littering and the indignation of being slimed with taxidermical boar slobber, and so here we are, back in Italy.

We had a great travel day to get here, if you don’t count that thing that you see happening in the movies where they get on the intercom asking if anyone on board is a doctor because a passenger is in medical distress.  We were a bit afraid of being rerouted to Iceland if the emergency was too serious.  Luckily, that didn’t happen.  We were also grateful that there was no announcement asking if anyone was a pilot.

So far, we have not a lot to report as we began our visit with a night in a Rome airport hotel followed today by a train trip to the port city of Civitavecchia. We had the pleasure of sitting next to a young couple from Florida that had just flown into Rome with their two little girls and ten other family members. After a day of flying, the 4 yr old and her 3 yr old sister kept us entertained and looked far better than we did after our day of travel!

We enjoyed a lovely afternoon in Civitavecchia followed by a spectacular sunset.

Tomorrow we board the Majestic Princess for a cruise that will deposit us near Venice ten days from now.  Then we will spend some time in Venice followed by a visit to Lake Como and then into Switzerland.  We’ll do our best to post every other day or so to document our adventures.  For today, we’ll just share a few pictures from Civitavecchia.
